Background of the Study

Ethical supply chain practices are essential in maintaining sustainable operations, building trust with stakeholders, and enhancing brand reputation. Ethical practices in the supply chain encompass fair labor conditions, environmental stewardship, and transparent sourcing processes (Adewuyi & Bello, 2023).

In Nigerian retail businesses, particularly in Kaduna State, ethical concerns such as exploitative labor, lack of supplier transparency, and environmental degradation persist. These practices undermine customer trust and corporate social responsibility (Ahmed & Musa, 2024). As global consumer demands for ethical practices grow, the retail sector in Kaduna must align its supply chain operations with ethical standards.

Statement of the Problem

The retail sector in Kaduna State faces significant challenges in implementing ethical supply chain practices due to inadequate regulations, limited awareness, and cost implications. Despite the benefits of ethical practices, many businesses prioritize cost-efficiency over ethical considerations, leading to reputational risks and operational inefficiencies (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2023).

While some studies address ethical supply chains in broader contexts, there is insufficient research on Kaduna State’s retail businesses. This study aims to fill this gap by examining ethical supply chain practices and their implications.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current state of ethical supply chain practices in retail businesses in Kaduna State.

  2. To identify challenges faced in implementing ethical supply chain practices.

  3. To propose strategies for improving ethical supply chain practices in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current state of ethical supply chain practices in retail businesses in Kaduna State?

  2. What challenges hinder the implementation of ethical supply chain practices?

  3. What strategies can improve ethical supply chain practices in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Ethical supply chain practices are not significantly implemented in retail businesses in Kaduna State.

  2. Challenges do not significantly hinder the implementation of ethical supply chain practices.

  3. Strategies for improving ethical supply chain practices do not significantly impact their adoption.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on retail businesses in Kaduna State, examining their supply chain practices between 2015 and 2025. Limitations include access to sensitive supply chain data and variations in business models.

Definitions of Terms

  • Ethical Supply Chain Practices: Operations that prioritize fair labor, environmental protection, and transparency.

  • Retail Businesses: Companies involved in selling goods directly to consumers.

  • Kaduna State: A region in northern Nigeria, serving as the study location.
